Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there wineries and vineyards this far North?
Before the last twenty years, there were only a few grapes that would survive our cold winters. Now the universities and a hybridizer, Elmer Swenson, have created a number of hybrid grapes (crosses between California and Midwest) that survive our cold winters and also make excellent wine.

Is there a difference between California and Midwest wines?
California or Mediterrean grapes/wines have been with us for many years. Unfortunately, people always want to compare the two varieties of wines. Both types are good wines but should not be compared. Each type has its own distinctive flavor and aromas and should be tasted and evaluated independently.

Do you raise your own grapes?
Yes, we raise the majority of our own grapes. We have 13 acres under cultivation and processed 42 tons of fruits this fall (08). Each ton will produce approximately 140 gallons of wine.

Do you sell only sweet wines?
No, we now have 28 different wines. These vary from red, white, sweet, dry, and special fruit wines. We recently produced a series of wines for that special occasion or that great gift for the holidays: four chocolate-flavored wines plus a cranberry wine and a blueberry/blackberry combination. They are very nice wines for that special person or event.

Does Kickapoo Creek Winery do things other than make and sell wine?
Yes. Kickapoo Creek Winery has a large banquet center seating up to 300 people along with a full-service kitchen. We do banquets, business meetings, reunions, educational seminars, and weddings. We also do off-site catering. No event is too small or too large. Karen Wahl, event coordinator, and Michael Van Raalte, our chef, have a reputation for the best food and service in Central Illinois.

Do you do weddings?
Kickapoo Creek Winery is building a wedding and event pavilion which is a permanent structure. This building will open up for outside weddings or events or can be closed when there is inclement weather. We also have a large patio, acres of landscaped grounds, and two lakes to enhance that special event.
